United Nations Removes Restrictions on Syrian President Ahead of White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members approved to an American proposal removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria before his White House visit the coming week.

Sharaa was named transitional president subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that drove out the former president in winter 2024, concluding thirteen long years of internal conflict.

America's diplomat Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.

He had been subject to UN sanctions as the leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to the extremist organization. America delisted the group from its registry of foreign terror groups during July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of these restrictions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and to friendly nations for backing the country and its population."

Imminent Washington Talks

President Sharaa's presidential meeting on Monday follows President Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Subsequent to their talks, the US president stated Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity for national reconciliation".

The pair met on their first occasion during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the Middle East.

After that meeting, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria before he cut connections during 2016.

Prior United States Journey

Monday's visit will not be Sharaa's first trip to the US during this period. This past fall, he made history as the first Syrian leader to present to the global assembly at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.

During his address, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status within the global community" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
