Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
