Taliban Authorities and Pakistan Claim Numerous Deaths in Fresh Border Fighting
Fresh fighting erupted along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border early on Wednesday morning, with each side blaming the opposing side of initiating lethal confrontations.
Pakistan's armed forces announced that its troops had eliminated "15-20 Taliban fighters" and wounded many in the Spin Boldak frontier area.
A Taliban government spokesman claimed that twelve non-combatants had been fatally struck and over a hundred wounded by artillery from Pakistan. He further stated that numerous military personnel had been lost their lives. None of the alleged fatalities could be independently confirmed.
Violence between the neighbouring countries has flared since explosions rocked Afghanistan last week, which the Afghan capital blamed on Pakistan. The Afghan leadership deny claims that it is harboring militants aiming at Pakistan.
Online Platforms and Armed Engagements
The two sides are not only fighting for the advantage on the frontier, but also on social media, trying to persuade the general population that their faction is inflicting greater losses.
The latest fighting come after severe cross-border confrontations over the weekend, when the Afghan forces claimed to have eliminated 58 members of the Pakistani military and Islamabad said it killed 200 "militants and linked insurgents". The reported casualty figures announced by both parties could not be independently verified.
A few days of fragile peace that had persisted since the weekend were broken on Wednesday.
On-the-Ground Reports and Impact
Videos allegedly of the conflict and its aftereffects have been shared on the internet and on messaging groups, including images said to be of those deceased and grainy shots from night vision cameras purporting to be of check posts demolished. These recordings have not been verified.
A source in the border area in Afghanistan stated that fighting broke out at around 4 a.m. local time (23:30 GMT on Tuesday). Another local in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the border crossing, said that "intense clashes continued for almost several hours".
"I see drones and jets soaring over us, a number of our relatives are injured," they said.
A doctor in one of the medical facilities in the region stated that he counted "7 fatalities and 36 wounded transported to the hospital", including males, women and minors.
The situation were "tense" and more victims were being taken to hospital, he said.
Evacuations and International Reactions
A local Taliban official in Spin Boldak announced that "hundreds of households have been displaced since the previous evening due to the heavy clashes". He mentioned they were on "high alert" after a several Taliban posts were targeted by aircraft from Pakistan. He further indicated that they had the bodies of 2 Pakistani military members.
In a separate overnight clash on the north-western border, the Pakistani military said that 25 to 30 militant and local insurgent fighters were "suspected" to have been eliminated.
The hostilities have led to appeals for reduced tensions from other countries including China and Moscow, as well as a proposal from US President Donald Trump that he could step in to broker a ceasefire.
On that day, Richard Bennett, United Nations representative on the situation of civil liberties in Afghanistan, posted on X that he was "very worried" by accounts of civilian casualties and evacuations because of the clashes.
"I call on everyone involved to practice the utmost caution, protect non-combatants, and follow global regulations," he stated.
Historical Tensions
Islamabad has for years accused the Afghan Taliban of permitting the Pakistan Taliban to function from their land and fight against the Pakistani administration in an effort to impose a rigid religion-based system of governance.
