Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim admits he cannot hide from his disappointing statistics and believes it is understandable that Old Trafford icons are questioning him.

On Tuesday, United's record scorer Wayne Rooney mentioned during his program that "the soul has vanished" from his former club.

The Portuguese manager has secured just 18 victories from his 49 games in control, featuring 9 out of thirty-three in the Premier League, where he has still to secure two successive victories.

While high-level Old Trafford sources are adamant that the club owner continues to be backing Amorim, failure to defeat newly promoted Sunderland on Saturday will trigger new discussion about his position heading into the upcoming fortnight pause in domestic football.

"This is understandable," stated the Portuguese manager, when asked about the former striker's comments. "You can't hide from the results."

"Then you have the legacy from the previous campaign, [although] last season for me doesn't matter."

Fan Response and Present Circumstances

Manchester United's fans stayed supportive of their manager following the previous campaign's poor showing, when they finished 15th in the table - their poorest performance since the 1973/74 demotion campaign - and were defeated in the Europa League showpiece, in the hope that this season would be substantially better.

Amorim assured supporters the position would change because he had more opportunity to work with his team without the weekly commitment of continental competition.

Unfortunately is not how the opening six matches have unfolded as Manchester United have experienced three defeats already and sit fourteenth in the standings.

Manager's Reaction to Questions

When questioned what assurances he could provide followers that the position will change, Amorim added: "It's not the moment to speak, it is the moment to demonstrate."

"Personally review the fixtures in the current campaign and, for me, they are entirely varied, but I have nothing to add at this moment."

  • Man Utd currently hold the fourteenth place in the top flight
  • Amorim has won just 18 of his 49 matches in charge
  • Wayne Rooney recently criticized the team's present situation
  • Saturday's match against Sunderland is important for Amorim's future
