2026 Dubbed the Age of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been far from new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their visibility has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this trend, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's rising status in the broader culture is also evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent creative potential for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year yet.
Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be on the verge of a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
